Katie Knight’s

Handpainted silver gelatin prints

In a receptive, listening mood, I am likely to glimpse flickers of mysterious radiance that emerges from ordinary subjects. Using infrared film allows me to capture that which is beyond the visible spectrum, and to photograph the auras of people, plants, and flowing water.  I observe our hunger for the sacred.  As humans we need to relate to that which is beyond ourselves, to pay attention to the cosmic pulse that connects us to the universe.  We also have the need to create, as an exploration and expression of our place in that dance.

I love the metaphors of photography:  expose, develop, negative becomes positive.  I make work prints from hundreds of negatives, then select some for exhibition prints. These I process archivally and sepia-tone.  Literal color does not concern me, so I paint on black and white photographs to express my sense of wonder.  For painting, I start with just primary hues of lithographic ink and oil to develop my own colors.  No two prints are painted the same way since I work on each individually and spontaneously, letting intuition guide me.  These photographs are for sale, and inquiries may be made directly to me:
